Stephens County, located in the great state of Oklahoma, has a rich and varied history. It was created on August 5, 1907, at the time of Oklahoma's statehood. It was named after John H. Stephens, a prominent Texas politician who played a significant role in the organization of the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory. Situated in the southern part of the state, the county covers an area of approximately 891 square miles and is surrounded by Garvin, Grady, Carter, Jefferson, and Comanche counties.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Comanche and Kiowa, who lived off the land and used its resources. After the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830, the area became part of the Choctaw Nation. Later, during the Civil War, several Native American tribes sided with the Confederacy, which led to internal divisions and land disputes.

In the late 19th century, the region experienced significant growth due to the expansion of the railroad and discovery of oil. The first oil well in Stephens County was drilled in 1913 near Duncan, which eventually led to the establishment of oil fields like Duncan Field and Velma Field. This oil boom contributed to an increase in the population, thriving industry, and economic prosperity for the area.

Today, Stephens County is largely known for its agricultural contributions, particularly in the areas of livestock, wheat, and cotton production. The Chisholm Trail, a historic cattle trail, also passes through the county, which was instrumental in influencing the development of towns like Marlow and Comanche.

Fun fact: In Stephens County, the town of Marlow is home to one of the oldest taverns in Oklahoma - the R & R Saloon. This establishment has been serving customers since 1894, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the region.
