Washita County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Oklahoma. Established in 1891 before Oklahoma became a state, it was originally known as County G. The area was part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Opening, a land run that occurred on April 19, 1892, when thousands of settlers raced to claim parcels of land. The county was officially named Washita, which comes from the Native American word "woshita," meaning "good hunting grounds."

The county seat, Cordell, holds a rich history with the arrival of the first settlers in the late 19th century. This town was relocated in 1904 due to the arrival of the St. Louis, El Reno, and Western Railway.

The economy in Washita County has been historically focused on agriculture; crops like wheat, cotton, and corn are prevalent, as well as livestock like cattle, milk cows, and swine. The oil and gas industry has also contributed to the economy with the first oil well being drilled in the county in 1911, leading to a peak of oil production in the 1920s.

A fun fact about Washita County, Oklahoma is the proximity of the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, located in neighboring Roger Mills County. This site commemorates the clash between the U.S. Seventh Cavalry led by Custer and the Cheyenne village led by Black Kettle, and is a powerful symbol of the complex history and relationship between native peoples and their colonizers in this region.
