Woodward County, located in the great state of Oklahoma, was originally established on August 4, 1891, as part of the Sixth Oklahoma Territorial Legislature. The county gets its name from Brinton W. Woodward, a freight agent for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company. It occupies an area of approximately 1,246 square miles in the northwestern part of Oklahoma.

Before its establishment, the land of Woodward County was primarily inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Kiowa, Comanche, and Arapaho. In the 1880s, cattle ranching thrived in the region, bringing in white settlers and spurring the growth of the cattle industry. The Cherokee Outlet land run in 1893 attracted an even larger number of settlers, which consequently led to the establishment and growth of several towns in the county.

The city of Woodward, designated as the county seat, also serves as a center for trade and commerce within the region. In the early 20th century, the discovery of oil and gas further transformed the county's economy, and the agricultural sector expanded to include wheat farming, hog raising, and dairy farming.

One fun fact about Woodward County is that it is the site of the country's first-ever nighttime airdrop by a parachute test platoon. This historic event occurred on July 1940 at a location currently known as the Woodward Airport Industrial Park. Since then, the town of Woodward has continued to celebrate this event by hosting the annual Skydiving Festival.
