Clatsop County, located in the northwest corner of Oregon, holds a significant place in the history of the United States. The county is named after the Clatsop tribe of Native Americans, who inhabited the area before the arrival of European explorers. The area was first explored by Europeans when Captain Robert Gray sailed his ship, the Columbia Rediviva, into the Columbia River in 1792. He named the river after his vessel, and this event marked a significant milestone in the history of North American exploration.

Clatsop County's early history is also closely tied to the legendary Lewis and Clark expedition. In the winter of 1805-1806, the explorers, along with their team of men, built and stayed at Fort Clatsop, located near present-day Astoria, Oregon. This fort served as the group's encampment and marked the end of their westward journey. It was here that they documented their new findings, regrouped, and then prepared for the return trip to the East Coast. Today, the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park commemorates their stay in the area.

Astoria, the county seat of Clatsop County, is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. It was founded by John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company in 1811 as a fur trading post. Astoria was later incorporated as a town in 1844. The city has a rich maritime and fishing heritage and played a vital role during World War II, serving as a base for patrolling the Pacific coastline.

A fun fact about Clatsop County is that it was the primary filming location for several iconic movies, such as "The Goonies" (1985), "Short Circuit" (1986), and "Kindergarten Cop" (1990). These movies have helped to amplify the county's cultural significance and make it an attractive destination for tourists who seek to explore its picturesque landscape and unique history.
