Grant County, located in the eastern part of the great state of Oregon, has a rich historical background. Established on October 14, 1864, it was named in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, the Union Army General and later the 18th US President. The area was initially inhabited by the Bannock, Northern Paiute, and Shoshone Native American tribes, and later by the mountain men, fur trappers, and explorers in the early 19th century.

The discovery of gold in the region during the 1860s attracted a significant influx of miners, settlers, and merchants to the area. By the year 1862, a number of mining camps and communities had sprung up, contributing immensely to the county's growth. Consequently, the economy primarily revolved around gold mining, livestock ranching, and the timber industry over the years.

The county seat, Canyon City, was established in 1862, following the Canyon Creek gold rush. It rapidly developed into a bustling town with thousands of prospectors and experienced one of Oregon's largest and most significant gold rushes.

A fun fact about Grant County is that it has been nicknamed "The Fossil Beds County" due to the presence of the renowned John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. This monument covers over 14,000 acres and is a treasure trove of well-preserved plant and animal fossils, providing unique insights into the ecological and evolutionary changes that took place on the North American continent over the past 55 million years.
