Hood River County is located in the beautiful state of Oregon in the Pacific Northwest region of the USA. It was officially established on June 23, 1908, when it was split from Wasco County. The county encompasses a total area of 534 square miles and is bordered by the Columbia River Gorge to the north. The county was named after Hood River, which in turn, was named after Mount Hood, the highest peak in Oregon. Mount Hood was named after Admiral Samuel Hood, a distinguished British naval officer.

The region was first inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Wyam, Watlala, and Wasco for thousands of years. Lewis and Clark explored the area in 1805, marking the first significant passage through the region by Europeans. As Oregon was opening for settlement, the region attracted many pioneers, with the first permanent white settler arriving in 1853.

The construction of the Oregon Trail and the arrival of the Oregon Steam Navigation Company aided in the development of Hood River County in the 19th century. The county's fertile lands made it ideal for farming, especially fruit orchards. The fruit industry experienced significant growth in the late 1800s and early 1900s, producing apples and pears, which are now world-famous.

A fun fact about Hood River County is that it is considered the windsurfing capital of the world. The strong winds and perfect conditions along the Columbia River Gorge have made it a premier destination for windsurfing enthusiasts. Every year, the Gorge welcomes thousands of water sport enthusiasts for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and stand-up paddleboarding, drawing in both national and international competitors.
