Josephine County, located in the southwestern region of the great state of Oregon, was established on January 22, 1856. The county was named in honor of Virginia Josephine Rollins, the first white woman to settle in the region. The county was originally a part of Jackson County, but the rapidly growing population at that time demanded splitting the territory into separate counties.

The first inhabitants of the area were Native American tribes such as the Takelma, Athabaskan, and Shasta people. As the gold rush gained momentum in the mid-19th century, many miners and settlers were drawn to Josephine County, leading to a notable increase in the region's population.

The county seat is Grants Pass, which was incorporated in 1887. Gold mining, logging, and agriculture played key roles in the county's economic growth. The Rogue River, which flows through Josephine County, facilitated the transportation of goods, particularly timber.

One fun fact about this region is the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve, which is located within Josephine County. Discovered in 1874, the caves offer a rare glimpse into a subterranean world made up of marble passages and unique geological formations. Visitors can explore this fascinating natural wonder on guided tours, making it a popular tourist attraction in the county.
