Tillamook County, situated along the northern coast of Oregon, boasts a rich and unique history. Established on December 15, 1853, the county's name is derived from the native Tillamook (also known as the Kilamox) people who inhabited the region for thousands of years. The area was initially explored by European fur traders, such as Robert Gray in 1788 and later, British traders in the 1800s.

In the 19th century, American pioneers settled in the Tillamook region via the Applegate Trail, one of the main overland paths that connected the greater Missouri region to the Oregon Territory. Agriculture, timber, and fishing quickly became the primary industries of Tillamook County, and dairying soon emerged as a vital component of the local economy.

The Tillamook Cheese Factory, founded in 1909, brought national recognition to the county and cemented it as a thriving center for premium dairy products. By merging ten different creameries, the Tillamook County Creamery Association became a cooperative among local farmers, and its handcrafted cheese products became synonymous with both the county and the State of Oregon.

One fun fact about Tillamook County is that it is home to the Tillamook Air Museum, which houses the largest privately-owned collection of World War II aircraft in North America. The museum is located in a World War II-era hangar, the largest wooden construct of its time, built to house airships designed for anti-submarine coastal patrols.
