.Umatilla County, located in the northeastern part of Oregon, was established on September 27, 1862. It was named after the Umatilla River, which flows through the area and is a tributary of the Columbia River. The word "Umatilla" is derived from the Native American Cayuse term meaning "water rippling over sand."
