Umatilla County, located in the northeastern part of Oregon, was established on September 27, 1862. It was named after the Umatilla River, which flows through the area and is a tributary of the Columbia River. The word "Umatilla" is derived from the Native American Cayuse term meaning "water rippling over sand." The region was originally inhabited by the Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla tribes before the arrival of European explorers and settlers.

In the mid-19th century, the Oregon Trail brought settlers to the region in search of fertile farmland, and many travelers passed through Umatilla County on their way westward. The county played a significant role in the state's agricultural development, with wheat, cattle, and sheep farming being major industries that continue to contribute to the local economy today.

Pendleton, the county seat, is known for its famous annual event, the Pendleton Round-Up, which started in 1910. This week-long rodeo and western celebration have been drawing thousands of visitors annually since its inception, celebrating the region's rich cowboy and Native American heritage. The city is also known for its woolen mills, the most famous one being Pendleton Woolen Mills, which produce Pendleton blankets renowned for their quality and intricate patterns inspired by Native American designs.

A fun fact about Umatilla County is that it is home to the McKay Creek National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area that serves as a habitat for various bird species, including Canada geese, great blue herons, and red-tailed hawks. The refuge, comprising a mixture of wetlands, grasslands, and forests, offers an excellent opportunity for birdwatching and nature exploration.
