Armstrong County is located in the western part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, USA. Established on March 12, 1800, it was carved out of parts of Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Lycoming Counties. Armstrong County was named in honor of General John Armstrong, who was a distinguished soldier in the Revolutionary War and a prominent political figure, having also served as a delegate to the Continental Congress.

The area had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries prior to European settlement, predominantly the Delaware and Seneca tribes. With the arrival of Europeans, the region experienced significant development; the first permanent settler was John Montgomery in the late 1700s. As the population grew, the economy thrived on the industries of lumber, coal, iron, and agriculture.

Kittanning, the county seat, lies along the Allegheny River - a prominent water route that played a central role in the development and growth of the county, serving as a major transportation channel for trade and commerce.

Armstrong County is rich with history and has a number of attractions, such as the Allegheny Valley Railroad, the Kittanning Bridge, and the Col. Drake District of the Penn Scenic View.

Fun Fact: Armstrong County is home to the Leechburg Area Museum and Historical Society, which displays a vast collection of artifacts and documents showcasing the history of the region, including an original lock from the Pennsylvania Canal System that operated in the 19th century. This lock is a testament to the county's significance in developing transportation and trade routes in Pennsylvania during that time.
