Bedford County, located in the great state of Pennsylvania, was officially established on March 9, 1771, from a part of Cumberland County. It was named after Fort Bedford, which had been named in honor of John Russell, the Fourth Duke of Bedford. This county, with its county seat in the eponymous town of Bedford, has been witness to several significant historical moments in the history of the United States.

Bedford County played a crucial role during the American Revolutionary War, especially as the site of the Forbes Road, which was an important military path connecting British forts in the area. Fort Bedford, constructed in 1758, was also an essential British outpost during the French and Indian War, and today, the fort's significance is commemorated through historical markers and sites.

The Bedford Springs Resort, established in the early 19th century, is a noteworthy landmark in Bedford County. This historic resort boasts of its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties. The resort catered to many prominent guests over the years, including US Presidents James Buchanan and Ronald Reagan, and the resort was once even used as the "Summer White House."

Bedford County was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with some of its residents contributing to the efforts of assisting enslaved African Americans escape to freedom during the 19th century.

A fun fact about Bedford County is the existence of the Gravity Hill, a local phenomenon near New Paris. At this site, vehicles appear to roll uphill when shifted to neutral, defying the laws of gravity. Although it is an optical illusion caused by the surrounding landscape, the phenomenon has attracted curious visitors over the years.
