Cambria County is situated in the great state of Pennsylvania and was established on April 1, 1804, from parts of Somerset, Huntingdon, and Bedford counties. It was initially home to Native Americans, primarily the Susquehannocks and the Delaware tribes. But following the Treaty of Fort Stanwix in 1768, the lands of the region were opened to European settlers.

Johnstown, the largest city and county seat of Cambria County, was founded in 1800 by Swiss-German settlers. Johnstown played a major role in the steel and coal industries, and the county's growth was primarily driven by these two industries during the 19th and 20th centuries. The county experienced a boom in population during this industrial growth, which led to the establishment of several additional towns in the area.

One of the most significant events in Cambria County's history was the Johnstown Flood of 1889. This disaster occurred when a poorly maintained private dam failed, releasing a devastating flood upon the city, which resulted in the loss of over 2,200 lives and substantial property damage. The flood remains one of the deadliest civilian disasters in the history of the United States.

A fun fact about Cambria County is that it is home to the World's Steepest Vehicular Inclined Plane, located in Johnstown. This historic funicular railway was built in 1891 to transport residents and visitors from the city's higher grounds to its lower sections, and vice versa. The Johnstown Inclined Plane, as it is known, climbs a 70.9% grade and is still in operation today, attracting tourists and providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
