Centre County, located in central Pennsylvania, was created on February 13, 1800, from parts of Huntingdon, Lycoming, Mifflin, and Northumberland counties. The county was named after its geographical center, as at that time it was the center of Pennsylvania. The county seat is Bellefonte, which was laid out in 1795 and incorporated in 1806.

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes like the Susquehannocks and the Iroquois before European settlers began to establish their presence in the 18th century. In 1768, the land was acquired by the British through the Treaty of Fort Stanwix, and it was later settled by Quakers, Germans, Scots-Irish, and other European immigrants.

Centre County experienced significant growth in the 19th century, largely driven by the iron industry. It was home to several iron furnaces, and both raw materials and finished products were shipped using the nearby canals, such as the Bald Eagle and Spring Creek navigations, and later the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), located in State College, was established in 1855 as the Farmer's High School of Pennsylvania. It has since grown to be a significant driver of the county's economy and culture, as well as a nationally recognized research institution.

As for a fun fact, Centre County has an annual event called the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. It was first held in 1967 and has become one of the largest and most celebrated arts events in the region, showcasing local and national artists, musicians, and other performers. The festival attracts more than 125,000 visitors each year and contributes a substantial amount to the local economy.
