Clearfield County is located in the north-central region of Pennsylvania, USA. This county was formed on March 26, 1804, from parts of Huntingdon and Lycoming Counties, and was named for Clearfield Creek. The term "clear field" was an 18th-century term for areas cleared for settlement, where trees and underbrush had been removed, making it easy to build housing and farm the land. Clearfield County's total land area is approximately 1,154 square miles.

Historically, Clearfield County was inhabited by various Native American tribes, and later by European, mainly English and Welsh, settlers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The region lagged behind the coastal areas of Pennsylvania, in terms of development and population growth, due to its dense forests and rugged terrain.

Clearfield County experienced an economic boom during the mid-19th century thanks to the lumber and coal industries. The West Branch of the Susquehanna River and its tributaries facilitated the shipping of lumber from the region. Coal mining, specifically bituminous coal, emerged as a significant industry in the area, shaping Clearfield County's economy and settlement patterns for decades to come.

Railroads, such as the Allegheny Valley Railroad, played a crucial role in the county's development by providing transportation links with other areas of Pennsylvania and neighboring states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The county's population grew during this time to accommodate the demand for workers in these industries.

Fun Fact: Clearfield County hosts the annual Groundhog Day celebration at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, where Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog, helps predict the arrival of spring. This quirky tradition has been held annually since the late 19th-century and attracts visitors from around the world.
