Delaware County, also known as Delco, is a county located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania. It was created on September 26, 1789, from part of Chester County and named after the Delaware River, which forms its eastern border. The county is rich in history, dating back to the early colonization by European settlers.

William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, was granted the land by King Charles II of England in 1681 as repayment for a debt the king owed to Penn's father. Penn then established the area as part of a larger territory called Pennsylvania. In 1682, the first settlers arrived in what is now Delaware County, mainly consisting of English Quakers seeking religious freedom.

During the American Revolution, Delaware County played a significant role, as it was centrally located between Philadelphia, where the Continental Congress met, and the battlefields of the Revolutionary War. The county was also part of the Underground Railroad network, assisting African American slaves in their journey to freedom.

Delaware County experienced rapid industrial growth during the 19th and 20th centuries, especially after the completion of railroads and canals. Industries such as textile mills, iron foundries, and shipbuilding greatly contributed to the region's development. Today, the county is a thriving community with a diverse blend of suburban and urban environments.

Fun Fact: One interesting tidbit about Delaware County is that it is home to the oldest continuously operating courthouse in the United States. The Delaware County Courthouse, located in Chester, has been in operation since 1724.
