Elk County is located in the northwest-central region of the great state of Pennsylvania. Established on April 18, 1843, the county was created from parts of Jefferson, McKean, and Clearfield Counties. Its name is derived from the large population of elk that once roamed the area. The county seat is Ridgway, named after Jacob Ridgway, who was a prominent Philadelphia landowner and developer.

During the 19th century, Elk County was at the heart of Pennsylvania's lumber and coal industries. The region's abundant natural resources helped to fuel the state's rapid industrial growth. In the late 1800s, the Ridgway and St. Marys Railroad was built, connecting the county's major towns and playing a pivotal role in the area's economic development.

One fun fact about Elk County is that it is home to the largest wild elk herd in the northeastern United States. Thousands of visitors flock to the county each year to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures, particularly during their mating season in the fall. The Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette Township serves as a hub for wildlife enthusiasts seeking to learn more about the local elk population and the conservation efforts in the region.
