Franklin County is located in the south-central region of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It was created on September 9, 1784, from part of Cumberland County and was named in honor of Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. The county seat is Chambersburg.

Franklin County has a rich history, with many significant events taking place in the region. During the French and Indian War, Chambersburg, the county seat, was a hub of military activity between the colonists and Indigenous people. In 1756, Fort Loudoun was built in the northwest area of the county as a defensive frontier fortification.

The county also played a role in the American Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg, a pivotal battle in the war, took place in neighboring Adams County. However, Chambersburg was a central location for the Confederate army's movements in Pennsylvania, and the town would be occupied three times by Southern forces. It was the only town in the North to be burned by Confederates, destroyed in 1864 in retaliation for the Union's destruction of Southern property.

Franklin County is known for its picturesque landscapes and rich agricultural history. The county is home to several state parks, forests, and the Appalachian Trail-perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. The area boasts fertile soil and diverse farming, with products such as field crops, fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

Fun fact: Franklin County is home to the world-famous Totem Pole Playhouse, which has been in operation since 1950. Located in Caledonia State Park, the playhouse is one of the best professional regional theaters on the East Coast, with many well-known actors and actresses having performed there throughout its history.
