McKean County is situated in the northwestern region of the great state of Pennsylvania, USA. Established on March 26, 1804, the county was named after the second Governor of Pennsylvania, Thomas McKean. It is comprised of over 981 square miles and organized in the year 1826.

The historical background of McKean County is deeply connected with the lumber and oil industries. The region witnessed significant growth as lumber mills prospered between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. However, the area's most substantial growth stemmed from the discovery of oil. The Bradford oil field in McKean County was a major producer in the late 19th century, soon becoming the world's leading oil source. Even though the county's oil fortunes began to decline in the early 20th century, it still holds an important place in the history of the American oil industry.

The county seat of McKean County is the charming city of Smethport, known for its picturesque landscapes and historical sites, including the Olmsted Manor Retreat and Conference Center and the McKean County Historical Society's Old Jail Museum. Moreover, McKean County is home to the Kinzua Bridge State Park, which boasts the Kinzua Viaduct - once the tallest and longest railroad viaduct in the world.
