Mercer County is located in the western part of the great state of Pennsylvania, founded on March 12, 1800, and named after Continental Army General Hugh Mercer. With its county seat in Mercer, the region originally was created from parts of Allegheny County.

In the early 19th century, Mercer County began to grow as settlers arrived, attracted by its fertile land and natural resources. Agricultural activities represented the primary means of livelihood. The county saw further development as transportation routes, such as the Erie Extension Canal and later the railroads, were established, facilitating the movement of goods and people.

Despite its small population, Mercer County has been known for various achievements. The town of Greenville, for example, played a significant role in early aviation history. In 1938, the Shenango Airport was built and served as a training facility for World War II pilots. This contributed to the growth and establishment of the Greenville-Reynolds Industrial Park.

The fun fact about Mercer County is that it is home to the popular tourist attraction, the Avenue of 444 Flags, in Hermitage. This patriotic site holds the most permanent display of American flags in the world, representing the 444 days of the Iranian hostage crisis (1979-1981). Visitors to this historic site can also explore the War on Terror Memorial, dedicated to those who served and sacrificed during America's fight against terrorism.
