Mifflin County, located in the great state of Pennsylvania, was created on September 19, 1789, from parts of Cumberland and Northumberland counties. It was named in honor of Thomas Mifflin, the first Governor of Pennsylvania and a distinguished figure in the American Revolution. The county seat is Lewistown, which was established as a trading post during the late 1700s.

The historical background of Mifflin County includes the influence of the Native American cultures, followed by the arrival of European settlers, primarily of German, Scots-Irish, and English descent. Lewistown, situated at the confluence of the Juniata River and the Kishacoquillas Creek, became a hub for industry, trade, and agriculture in the region during the 1700s and 1800s.

In the 19th century, the construction of the Pennsylvania Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad fostered the growth of Mifflin County, connecting it to major cities such as Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. These infrastructure advancements led to industrial development, including iron, coal, and steel production as well as the establishment of various factories.

Today, Mifflin County has a rich historical heritage, with several notable attractions and landmarks to visit, such as the McCoy House Museum, Greenwood Furnace State Park, Seven Mountains, and the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy.

One fun fact about Mifflin County is that it is home to the first and oldest continuously operated desert (especially pie) shop in the United States, the Ye Olde Dutch Dessert Shoppe, also known as the Dutch Country Inn. Established in 1776, the dessert shop is located in the Blue Juniata American Legion Post 575 - a must-visit for dessert lovers and history buffs alike.
