.Monroe County is located in the northeastern region of the great state of Pennsylvania, USA. Established on April 1, 1836, the county was named in honor of the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe. Throughout its history, Monroe County has been predominantly agricultural with early settlements focusing on farming and lumbering.
The area has a rich Native American heritage as well, with the Lenni-Lenape and Shawnee tribes originally inhabiting the land before European settlers arrived. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Europeans, primarily of Dutch, German, and English descent, began settling in the region.
The construction of the Delaware and Lehigh Canals in the 1820s and 1830s vastly contributed to Monroe County's industrial growth, facilitating the transportation of coal, timber, and other goods. This industrial boom led to the rise of several towns, including Stroudsburg, which eventually became the county seat in 1836.
As the railroad industry emerged in the mid-19th century, Monroe County saw increases in tourism as the area became more accessible. The region's natural beauty and amenities, such as the Delaware Water Gap and Pocono Mountains, attracted visitors seeking leisure and outdoor recreation.
