Montgomery County, located in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, was created on September 10, 1784, out of land that was originally part of Philadelphia County. The county was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an Irish-born soldier who served as a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The county seat, Norristown, was selected by a panel of judges in 1784 and officially established as the county seat in 1812.

Montgomery County played a significant role in American history, particularly during the Revolutionary War. Valley Forge, a noteworthy historical site within the county, served as the winter encampment for the Continental Army from 1777 to 1778. This crucial period marked a turning point in the war, as the Continental Army emerged as a more cohesive and disciplined fighting force.

The area experienced steady growth with the advancement of transportation systems, such as the construction of the Schuylkill Canal and the development of the railway network. By the mid-20th century, Montgomery County transformed into a suburban center due to its close proximity to Philadelphia.

A fun fact about Montgomery County is it is home to the Bryn Athyn Historic District, which features beautiful examples of early 20th-century Beaux-Arts architecture, including the renowned Glencairn Museum and the iconic Bryn Athyn Cathedral.
