Montour County, located in the great state of Pennsylvania, was established on May 3, 1850. It was named in honor of Madame Montour, a famous Native American diplomat who played a crucial role in the region's early history. The county was carved out of Columbia County, making it the smallest county in the state, covering approximately 132 square miles.

Originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, European settlers gradually arrived in the 18th century. The Montour County area was rich in history, with significant events like the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, both of which impacted the region.

The development of Montour County was greatly influenced by the construction of the North Branch Canal, which facilitated trade and transportation. The county's economy initially relied on agriculture and the budding coal-mining industry. Later on, Danville in Montour County became a significant player in the iron industry after the development of the first iron T-rail in the United States in 1845. This invention, created by Danville resident Robert Bowie, revolutionized railroads and transportation and led to a thriving iron industry.

Montour County is also home to the Montour Preserve, a popular recreational area near the Chillisquaque Creek where visitors can engage in various outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and birdwatching.

Fun Fact: One unique attraction in Montour County is the legendary "Mooresburg One-Room Schoolhouse," which is a restored, historic one-room schoolhouse that was in operation from 1873 to 1954.
