Schuylkill County is located in the northeastern region of Pennsylvania, covering an area of approximately 783 square miles. It was officially established on March 1, 1811, and was named after the Schuylkill River. The word "Schuylkill" is derived from a Dutch term, "Schuylkil," which means "hidden river." Pottsville serves as the county seat.

Schuylkill County played a significant role during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century since it was a hub for coal mining, specifically anthracite coal. The county was home to the first anthracite coal mine in America, which opened in 1775. The abundance of anthracite coal led to the rapid development of the mining industry, as well as the expansion of the railroad system in the region. The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, completed in 1842, helped transport coal from Schuylkill County to larger markets, significantly contributing to the growth of the county's economy.

One fun fact about Schuylkill County is that it hosts the annual "Kielbasi Festival" in the town of Shenandoah, where competitors showcase their delicious homemade kielbasi (a Polish sausage) in a contest, and visitors can enjoy the tasty kielbasi, live music, and various cultural displays. The Kielbasi Festival has become a popular event, celebrating both the local culinary talent and honoring the area's rich Polish heritage.
