Snyder County is located in the Susquehanna Valley region in the central part of the great state of Pennsylvania. It was formed on March 2, 1855, from parts of Union County, and named in honor of Simon Snyder, the third Governor of Pennsylvania, who served from 1808 to 1817.

The county has a rich history originating from Native American settlements, particularly the Susquehannock and Iroquois tribes. During the 18th century, European settlers, mostly of German and Scotch-Irish descent, started to inhabit the area, establishing agricultural communities. The construction of the Pennsylvania Canal and various railroads in the first half of the 19th century played a critical role in the region's economic development, with industries like manufacturing, logging, and agriculture thriving.

Snyder County has a variety of historical sites and landmarks, including the Governor Simon Snyder Mansion and the Francesco Daniel Maria Scala Cemetery, which is dedicated to the workers who constructed the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 19th century.

Fun fact: The Pennsylvania Dutch Hex sign, a form of traditional Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, is prevalent in Snyder County. These colorful and intricate signs can be found on various barns and buildings throughout the county, each featuring unique designs meant to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
