Somerset County, located in the great state of Pennsylvania, has a rich and diverse history that dates back to the 18th century. It was established on April 17, 1795, when it was separated from Bedford County. Covering an area of approximately 1,081 square miles, it is part of the Laurel Highlands region.

Initially, the area which comprises present-day Somerset County was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Shawnee, Delaware, and Iroquois. European settlers, primarily of German, Irish, and Scottish descent, began to arrive in the mid-to-late 1700s. The region became an essential stage for transportation and trade, with the construction of the Glades Path, a part of the larger Nemacolin's Path, connecting the region to other parts of Pennsylvania.

In the 19th century, the county flourished as a center of agriculture, timber, and coal production. Small family farms became the backbone of the local economy, producing crops like wheat, corn, and potatoes. The county also played a crucial role in the industrial development of the United States, with its abundant coal resources powering mills, factories, and households.

Throughout its history, Somerset County has been the site of several significant events. During the Whiskey Rebellion in 1791-1794, Somerset County residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the federal government's excise tax on whiskey. And, in the American Civil War, the county sent soldiers to join the Union forces fighting against the Confederacy.

A fun fact about Somerset County is that it is home to the Flight 93 National Memorial, a tribute to the brave passengers and crew of the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in a field near Shanksville on September 11, 2001. The memorial honors the heroes who prevented the terrorists from reaching their intended target in Washington, D.C., and continues to be an essential site for remembering the tragic events of that day.

Today, Somerset County continues to be a vibrant region, rich in natural beauty and historic charm, attracting visitors to experience its unique blend of history, culture, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
