Barnwell County, located in the great state of South Carolina, has a rich historical background dating back to the 1700s. The county was established on March 6, 1798, as a part of the Orangeburg District. Named after John Barnwell, a prominent South Carolinian military and political leader in the 18th century, the county has experienced significant growth and development over the years.
Barnwell County played an important role during the American Revolutionary War. Robert Barnwell, great-grandfather of John Barnwell, was a loyalist who was forced into exile as a result of the war. The county was initially a predominantly agricultural area, with settlers engaging in various farming activities, such as tobacco and cotton production. The fertile soil and use of slave labor contributed to the growth of many plantations. These plantations played a vital role in feeding the local community, as well as supplying products to other Southern states.
During the Civil War, Barnwell County remained relatively unscathed. However, it did witness some military activity, including the Battle of Rivers' Bridge, which took place in neighboring Bamberg County in February 1865. This battle was a part of General William T. Sherman's Carolinas Campaign.
In the years following the Civil War, the county's population and economy grew steadily, partly due to the expansion of the railroad network across South Carolina. This facilitated the transportation of goods and people between Barnwell County and other regions within the state.
One fun fact about Barnwell County is that it is home to the "God's Acre Healing Springs." These springs, owned by the town of Blackville, are believed to have healing qualities. Colonists and Native Americans used them for medicinal purposes since the 1700s. The springs were deeded to "God Almighty" in 1944 by L.P. "Lute" Boylston to ensure access to the water for all people, forever. Today, the natural spring water remains a popular attraction with both locals and visitors seeking the reputed therapeutic benefits.
