Berkeley County is located in the eastern part of the state of South Carolina and is part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area. Established in 1682, the county was named after John Berkeley and William Berkeley, two of the eight Lords Proprietors who were granted the rights to the Carolinas by King Charles II of England. The county's history is deeply rooted in colonial America, with a rich story of early settlers, plantation life, and agriculture.

During the Revolution, Berkeley County was the site of several key patriot victories, including major battles at Moncks Corner and Eutaw Springs. In 1882, the county was disbanded and split into the present-day Charleston and Berkeley counties. However, in 1895, it was re-established with the boundaries we recognize today.

Berkeley County has experienced significant economic growth over the years, largely due to its proximity to Charleston and the establishment of industries such as the Charleston Naval Base and Shipyard. Today, the county is not only a center for commerce but also a hub for arts, culture, and natural beauty. The region boasts numerous historical landmarks, such as the Mepkin Abbey (a former plantation turned Trappist monastery), the Old Santee Canal Park, and Cypress Gardens, which attract thousands of visitors every year.

Fun fact: Berkeley County was the site of America's first recorded commercial tea plantation, called the Pinehurst Tea Plantation, which was established in 1888. Although it is no longer operational, it paved the way for the emergence of other tea plantations in the area, such as the Charleston Tea Garden on nearby Wadmalaw Island.
