Calhoun County, located in the great state of South Carolina, was established on February 14, 1908. Named after the renowned statesman, John C. Calhoun, the county was created from portions of Lexington and Orangeburg counties. Situated in the Midlands region of the state, Calhoun County is often referred to as the "Birthplace of American Agriculture," due to the extremely fertile soil of the region.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the land was inhabited by indigenous groups, such as the Congaree and Santee tribes. Following the settlement of Europeans came the development of plantations, which were largely manned by enslaved Africans. After the Civil War, the region shifted from a plantation-based society to a more diversified agricultural industry.

Notably, the Savannah River Site, a nuclear facility, is partly located in Calhoun County, and it has played a significant role in the local economy since the 1950s.

A fun fact about Calhoun County is that it is home to the annual "Shad Festival" held every March in St. Matthews, the county seat. The festival includes various activities such as arts and crafts, a shad fish fry, and a parade to celebrate the local wildlife and the importance of the shad fish to the region.
