Dillon County is located in the northeastern part of South Carolina, in the United States. The county was established on February 6, 1910, from a portion of Marion County. It was named after James W. Dillon, a local Irish merchant and major landowner, who was instrumental in the formation of the county.

The area was inhabited by Native Americans prior to European colonization, specifically the Pee Dee tribe, who gave their name to the Pee Dee River that flows through the region. Europeans arrived mainly in the 18th century, and in the early 19th century, the community started to develop as a result of food processing and the timber industry. Dillon County saw growth and an economic resurgence with the arrival of a railroad line in the late 19th century, which connected the county to larger markets and trade networks.

The county is primarily rural, with agriculture playing a significant role in its economy. Key crops include tobacco, cotton, and soybeans. Additionally, the county has embraced manufacturing, distribution, and logistics industries, contributing to its overall economic development.

A fun fact about Dillon County is that it is home to one of the largest rocking chairs in the world. Known as the "South of the Border Big Rocking Chair," it stands at a staggering 36 feet tall and is located in the famous tourist destination, South of the Border. This roadside attraction features restaurants, shops, and various entertainment venues, providing an amusing stop for travelers along Interstate 95.
