Dorchester County is situated in the coastal plains region of South Carolina and was formed in 1897 from portions of Colleton and Berkeley counties. The county is named after Reverend William Dorchester, an early South Carolina settler and English colonial religious leader. Covering approximately 576 square miles, the county initially had no official county seat due to the strong rivalry between the towns of St. George and Summerville. It wasn't until 1910 that St. George was officially designated as the county seat.

The region boasts a rich history dating back to Native American settlements, growing through the establishment of several plantations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Indigo, cotton, and rice were the primary cash crops of the area. Dorchester County played a role in major historical events such as the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, with several significant battle sites located within its boundaries.

One fun fact about Dorchester County is the presence of the historic landmark, Middleton Place. Consisting of America's oldest landscaped gardens and a plantation house, Middleton Place was established in the 1740s and provides a glimpse into the region's intricate history. The estate has witnessed American history from its earliest days, including the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of a signer of the U.S. Constitution, Arthur Middleton. Today, Middleton Place is open to the public and offers tours, educational programs, and special events that showcase the rich history of Dorchester County in South Carolina.
