Florence County is located in the eastern part of the great state of South Carolina. Established in 1888, it was named in honor of General William W. Harllee's daughter, Florence. General Harllee was a prominent figure in building the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad, contributing significantly to the economic development of the area. Florence County's area is approximately 803 square miles, and its county seat is the city of Florence, which is also the largest city in the county.

Before its establishment as a county, the land that now comprises Florence County was part of older settlements such as Darlington, Marion, and Williamsburg. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it witnessed significant economic benefits due to its fertile soil suitable for the cultivation of cotton, indigo, lumber, and naval stores. The railroad connection further boosted its economy by stimulating trade and commerce, while also attracting settlers to the region.

A fun fact about Florence County is that its original courthouse, which was built in 1888, was constructed using stones collected by local residents as a part of a building fund. Florence County has seen tremendous growth in recent decades and is now an important center for industry, health care, education, and culture in the region. The county offers various attractions, including historical sites like the Florence Stockade, which served as a prison for 12,000 Union soldiers during the American Civil War.
