Greenwood County is located in the great state of South Carolina and was established on March 27, 1897. The county was formed from parts of Abbeville County and Edgefield County, with its county seat being the city of Greenwood, which was named after Chief Justice John B. O'Neall's plantation called "Greenwood."

The region was initially inhabited by indigenous people before European settlers arrived in the 18th century. Greenwood County experienced growth and development in the 19th century, partly due to the expansion of the railway system. The railroad played a significant role in connecting the county to other parts of South Carolina and the United States, promoting trade and industry.

Greenwood County was deeply affected by the Civil War, and the Reconstruction Era brought economic and political changes to the region. The county prospered with the growth of the textile industry in the early 20th century, with several mills being built in the area. Agriculture continued to be an essential aspect of the local economy, with cotton being the primary crop.

A fun fact about Greenwood County is that it is home to the South Carolina Festival of Flowers, which is held annually in Greenwood City. This event showcases beautiful flowers, topiaries, and horticultural displays, attracting thousands of visitors from all over the United States. The festival started in the late 1960s and has grown to become one of South Carolina's premier events.
