Hampton County, located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, was established on February 25, 1878, and named in honor of General Wade Hampton, a prominent plantation owner, Confederate general during the Civil War, and later Governor of South Carolina. The county seat, also called Hampton, was founded in the same year.

Hampton County was originally part of Beaufort District, which in 1769 had been created by combining the parishes of St. Peter, St. Luke, and St. Helena. A long history of agriculture can be traced back in the region, particularly focused on the production of rice, indigo, and Sea Island cotton in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The growth of the railroad system in the late 19th and early 20th centuries boosted the region's economy, connecting Hampton County with larger cities such as Charleston and Savannah. The area developed a strong timber industry, as well as other goods and services for the surrounding communities.

Today, Hampton County features a blend of rural areas, small towns, recreational sites, and historic landmarks. Its southern borders are graced by the Savannah River, creating a beautiful landscape and providing opportunities for fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities.

Fun fact: Hampton County is home to the annual Hampton County Watermelon Festival, the oldest state-sanctioned continuing festival in South Carolina. This celebration of the local watermelon crop started in 1939 and includes various events like a parade, street dance, and, of course, watermelon eating contests.
