Horry County, located in the northeastern part of South Carolina, was officially established in 1801, though its history dates back much further. Before European settlement, the area was home to various Native American tribes, including the Waccamaw and the Winyah. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Spanish explorers like Lucas Vazquez de Aylln and English settlers started arriving in the region.

During its early years, Horry County was part of the larger Georgetown District, but then it was separated and named Kingston County. It was later renamed in honor of Peter Horry, a Revolutionary War hero who was instrumental in defending the area from British invasion. He later became a commander of the South Carolina militia.

Much of Horry County's early economy relied on agriculture and lumber industries. The introduction of railroads in the late 19th century facilitated transportation to markets in the Northeast, and with its vast natural resources, Horry County flourished. In the 20th century, the region underwent a transformation as it shifted towards tourism.

The establishment of the coastal city of Myrtle Beach in 1900 played a major role in Horry County's development. Today, Myrtle Beach is one of the East Coast's most popular vacation spots, attracting millions of visitors yearly.

One fun fact about Horry County is that it is the largest county by area in South Carolina, spanning over 1,134 square miles. Additionally, the county is home to the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses over 30,000 acres of diverse habitats displaying the beauty of the region's flora and fauna.
