Jasper County is located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, a state within the United States of America. Established on February 26, 1912, Jasper County was formed from the southern and western portions of Beaufort County. It was named after Sergeant William Jasper, a war hero from the American Revolutionary War known for his ostentatious courage during the defense of Fort Moultrie in 1776.

In its early days, the region's economy was primarily driven by agriculture, with rice, indigo, and cotton being the main cash crops. Many plantations were established, and the owners built their wealth on the labor of enslaved people. Following the Civil War, the plantation system disintegrated, and the economy started to diversify, with logging, shrimping, truck farming, and tourism gradually contributing to the local economy.

The county seat, Ridgeland, was originally called Gopher Hill, due to the abundance of gopher tortoises in the area. It was later renamed Ridgeland in 1902, honoring William C. J. West who was an influential lumber merchant in the area.

One fun fact about Jasper County is that it is home to the Blue Heron Nature Trail, an interactive nature trail that features a beautiful boardwalk, where visitors can observe local wildlife, including the blue heron, from which the trail gets its name.
