.Lee County, located in the great state of South Carolina, has an extensively rich history dating back to its formation in 1902. The county gets its name in honor of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the Civil War. It is a part of the Sumter Metropolitan Statistical Area and has a total area of 410 square miles.
Lee County boasts a diverse cultural heritage, having been inhabited by various native groups including the Siouan, Santee, and Catawba tribes prior to European settlement. In the early 1700s, the first English settlers began to arrive, followed by Scotch-Irish, Welsh, and German immigrants. Agriculture played a vital role in shaping the county's economy, with cotton, corn, and tobacco as the primary crops cultivated for many years.
During the Civil War, the county's territory was divided between Sumter and Kershaw Counties. However, after a period of growth and persistence from local leaders, the South Carolina legislature agreed to create Lee County on February 25, 1902.
Fun fact: One fascinating aspect of Lee County's history is that it's home to the "Button King", Dalton Stevens. In the 1980s, Stevens began sewing buttons onto various items by hand, including clothes, cars, and a toilet.
