McCormick County is located in the western part of the great state of South Carolina. It was formed in 1916 from parts of Abbeville, Greenwood, and Edgefield counties, making it the most recently established county in South Carolina. The county was named in honor of Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the mechanical reaper, who played an essential role in advancing agricultural productivity.

The area has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Native American tribes such as the Creek and Cherokee once inhabited the region. European settlers arrived initially in the 1750s, drawn to the land's fertile soil and ample natural resources. During the Revolutionary War, the area witnessed several notable battles, such as the Battle of Long Cane and the Battle of Savannah.

McCormick County thrived in agriculture, particularly in cotton production, in the 19th century. Towns like Willington and Bordeaux played crucial roles in the growth of plantation culture. The subsequent decline in cotton production after the Civil War led to the rise of the timber, textile, and milling industries.

The county is now known for outdoor recreational activities centered around its picturesque lakes, forests, and parks. The Savannah River, Strom Thurmond Lake, and Sumter National Forest are popular destinations for tourists and locals alike. The region also hosts various festivals, such as the Gold Rush Festival, which celebrates its rich gold-mining heritage.

Fun fact: The town of McCormick in McCormick County was once the site of the second-largest gold mine in the eastern United States. The Dorn Gold Mine was discovered in 1852 and operated until the 1930s. This gold rush era greatly contributed to the growth and development of the town during that time.
