Saluda County, located in the great state of South Carolina, has a rich historical background. Established on February 25, 1896, it was formed from a portion of Edgefield County. The county is named after the Saluda River, which serves as its eastern boundary. Saluda County is part of South Carolina's Piedmont region, which is known for its rolling hills and fertile lands. The county covers an area of approximately 462 square miles.

In the early days, the area was inhabited by Cherokee and Creek Native American tribes. European settlers arrived in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, primarily from England, France, and Germany. The region's fertile soil made agriculture the primary focus of the local economy, with cotton being the main cash crop. The use of enslaved labor played a significant role in the development of plantations and the overall economy of the area during the Antebellum period.

Saluda County played a pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War. One notable event was the battle of Stono Ferry, which took place on June 20, 1779. This battle marked a turning point in the conflict as the American colonists began to gain momentum against the British forces.

After the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, the economy in Saluda County shifted to include more diverse agricultural and industrial pursuits. Textile mills and factories eventually replaced large plantations as the primary source of the area's economic growth.

A fun fact about Saluda County is that it has the smallest population of all 46 South Carolina counties, with an estimated population of around 20,000 residents. However, the county is known for its beautiful landscapes, outdoor recreational opportunities, and historical sites, which draw visitors from around the region and beyond.
