Sumter County is located in the heart of South Carolina and is named after General Thomas Sumter, a celebrated Revolutionary War hero. Established in 1800, the county's roots go back to 1734 when the first English settlers arrived in the region. These settlers were mainly attracted by the high-quality soil and the navigable access to the Black River and Santee River.

In the early years, the county was primarily an agricultural community with major crops being cotton, soybeans, and corn. In the 19th century, Sumter County played a significant role in the Civil War as numerous skirmishes between the Union and Confederate armies took place within its borders. After the war, the county faced significant challenges as agriculture-based economies struggled due to the end of the plantation system and the Great Depression.

The 20th century saw a shift from agriculture towards industry with the establishment of Shaw Air Force Base in 1941. This greatly impacted the economy and contributed to the population growth in the area. Today, Sumter County is an important commercial, industrial, and agricultural center of South Carolina.

A fun fact about Sumter County is that it is home to the Swan Lake Iris Gardens, the only public park in the United States that features all eight species of swans. The garden also hosts the impressive Sumter Iris Festival, South Carolina's oldest continuous festival which has been held annually since 1940.
