York County is located in the north-central part of South Carolina and is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Established in 1785, York County was originally one of the seven districts that were created when the state's former country (court) system was abolished. The county was named in honor of Captain John White Young, a Revolutionary War officer renowned for leading the locals in various battles. Historically, York County has played a significant role in the region's growth, particularly during the American Revolution as the site of several key battles.

In the 19th century, the county experienced an increase in population and industry, with its primary focus on textiles and agriculture. Its landscape consists of gently rolling hills that are ideal for farming, which led to the establishment of cotton, corn, and wheat plantations. Over time, the population diversified with new settlers from various European communities.

One fun fact about York County is that it is home to the annual South Carolina Strawberry Festival, which is held in Fort Mill during the first full weekend of May. The festival celebrates the local strawberry harvest and offers family-friendly activities, live entertainment, and a wide variety of strawberry-themed treats. This event is widely recognized for its uniquely Southern charm and attracts visitors from both South Carolina and neighboring states.
