Bennett County is a county located in the southern part of the state of South Dakota, USA. It was established in 1909 and was named after John E. Bennett, a prominent lawyer and politician who served as the Attorney General of South Dakota.

The area that is now Bennett County was once inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Lakota and the Cheyenne. In the late 19th century, European-American settlers began to arrive in the area, drawn by the opportunities for farming and ranching.
