Brookings County is located in the eastern part of the great state of South Dakota. Established on July 3, 1871, the county is named after Wilmot W. Brookings, a pioneer and prominent South Dakota politician who served as Provisional Governor of the Dakota Territory. The county covers an area of approximately 793 square miles.

The historical background of Brookings County began with the settlement of European-American settlers in the late 19th century. Brookings County was initially sparsely populated, but its population increased substantially with the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s. The city of Brookings, the county seat, was founded in 1880 when railroad officials designated it as a station stop.

The agricultural industry played a vital role in the growth and development of Brookings County, which has long been known as an agriculturally-rich region. The fertile soil in the area is conducive to farming, and corn, soybeans, and wheat are the main crops grown in the county.

One fun fact about this region in the USA is that Brookings County is home to South Dakota State University (SDSU), established in 1881 as a land-grant institution. SDSU is the largest and oldest continually operating university in the state, offering a vast range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. Moreover, since agriculture plays an essential role in the county's economy, SDSU is renowned for its College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences, which continues to make significant contributions in agricultural research and development.
