Brown County is located in the northeastern part of South Dakota and was officially established in 1879. It was named in honor of Alfred Brown, who served as a member of Dakota Territory's first legislative assembly and a prominent politician.

The region was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Dakota Sioux, before European settlers arrived in the late 1800s. The county saw a significant increase in its population during the Dakota Boom in the 1880s, when people migrated to the area for affordable land and opportunities offered by the railroad's expansion.

Aberdeen, the largest city and the county seat of Brown County, was founded in 1881 as a stop along the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town developed rapidly, and by the early 20th century, Aberdeen became a bustling hub for trade and agriculture in the region. The city is home to both Northern State University and Presentation College, which contribute to the local economy and cultural scene.

One fun fact about this region of the USA is that Brown County is home to the annual South Dakota Film Festival held in Aberdeen. Since its inception in 2007, the festival has showcased independent films from around the world, attracting movie enthusiasts, industry professionals, and filmmakers to the area.
