Buffalo County is located in the great state of South Dakota and was established on February 2, 1871. It was formed from a part of Charles Mix County, and its original boundaries have remained relatively unchanged since its creation. The county was named in honor of the American bison, also commonly known as buffalo, which once roamed the Great Plains in large numbers.

Gettysburg serves as the county seat, and the county is part of the sprawling reservation lands of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. The tribe holds significant cultural and historical connections to the region, with their ancestors having lived in the area for many generations. The reservation is governed by a Tribal Council, consisting of elected representatives.

Buffalo County is predominantly rural, with agriculture being the primary economic activity. The rich grasslands and fertile soils provide ideal conditions for raising livestock and cultivating crops. The Missouri River runs along the eastern border of the county, providing additional water resources and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
