Butte County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of South Dakota. Established on March 2, 1883, it was named after the numerous buttes or small flat-topped hills that dot its landscape. The county seat is the city of Belle Fourche, which means "beautiful fork" in French, named for the confluence of the Redwater and Hay Creek rivers with the Belle Fourche River.

In its early years, Butte County was primarily a ranching and farming region. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century led to rapid development, growth in population, and an increase in the number of settlers moving to the area. The economy was then diversified with the inclusion of industries like mining, logging, and agriculture.

One fun fact about Butte County is that it is home to the geographical center of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii). This monumental point is recognized by a monument, located approximately 20 miles north of the city of Belle Fourche. The monument draws visitors from across the country who want to stand at the "heart" of the nation.
