Charles Mix County is located in the southeastern part of the great state of South Dakota. Established on January 8, 1862, the county was originally a part of the Dakota Territory. It was named in honor of Charles Eli Mix, who served as the Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1849-1850 and later as Acting Commissioner between 1861-1869. The county spans across an area of approximately 1,150 square miles and consists of a mix of rolling plains and fertile farmlands.

The county's economy has historically been driven by agriculture, with its fertile lands supporting the production of crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. Additionally, cattle and hog farming also contribute to the region's agricultural industry.

The Native American history of the area is rich and diverse, with the county containing portions of the Yankton Sioux Reservation. The Fort Randall Dam, situated along the Missouri River, was constructed between 1946 and 1954 and is of significant historical importance for the region.
