Clay County, located in the southeastern part of South Dakota, was established in 1862 and organized in 1871. Its name is derived from Henry Clay, a prominent American politician, statesman, and skilled orator who served in both the House of Representatives and Senate. The county seat is Vermillion, which is also home to the University of South Dakota, the state's oldest university founded in 1862.

Originally, the land was inhabited by the Yankton Sioux Tribe, who called the area "Wakpa Was'te," which translates to "Good River." In the mid-19th century, European settlers began moving into the region as part of the westward expansion throughout the United States.

One of the most significant historical events in Clay County was the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie, where Meriwether Lewis and William Clark visited during their famous Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804. They were drawn to the site due to Native American legends about a hill where little spirits lived. The Spirit Mound visit is an example of the thousands of years of Native American culture that have contributed to the history of the area.

A fun fact about Clay County is that it is home to the National Music Museum, located on the University of South Dakota's campus. The museum has an extensive collection of over 15,000 musical instruments from around the world, dating back hundreds of years, making it a must-visit destination for music enthusiasts.
