Custer County, located in the Black Hills region of the great state of South Dakota, was established in 1875. It was named in honor of General George Armstrong Custer, who was a United States Army officer and cavalry commander in the American Civil War and the American Indian Wars. The county was originally a part of the Dakota Territory, which later became the state of South Dakota when it entered the Union in 1889. The county seat is the town of Custer.

Custer County is known for its rich history, scenic beauty, and outdoor recreational opportunities. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills by Custer's 1874 expedition led to the Black Hills Gold Rush, attracting prospectors and settlers to the region. The county has several important historically significant sites, including the Crazy Horse Memorial and Custer State Park.

Custer State Park, in particular, is one of the largest state parks in the United States, covering an area of 71,000 acres. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including bison, elk, bighorn sheep, and prairie dogs. One fun fact about the park is that it hosts the annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival, a unique event where cowboys and cowgirls round up and count the park's herd of around 1,300 bison. The event also includes an arts festival, featuring works from over 150 artists across the region.
